HISTORY OF RESEARCH FUNDING
                                  1973-74 - 2003-04


The California Lettuce Research Board (Board) has funded numerous research
projects since its inception in 1973.  Funding has been provided to University of
California, United States Department of Agriculture and independent researchers.
Since 1980, funding has occurred in four major categories as follows:

         • Plant breeding and virus related research.
         • Insect and disease management research.
         • Cultural and weed management research.
         • Post harvest and miscellaneous research.

The Board has maintained records of funding since its inception and has expended
approximately $10,727,888 since 1973.  Funding records are not as complete from
1973-1980 with estimated total expenditures during that period at $444,739.  Since
1980 more complete records are available with the following amounts expended in
each of the four aforementioned categories: 1)  Plant breeding and virus research -
$6,112,559; 2)  Insect and disease management research - $3,003,082; 3)  Cultural and weed management research - $749,158; and 4) Post harvest and miscellaneous
research $418,350.
